Risk Assessment
Chemical Plant Istrochem in Bratislava, Slovakia
In cooperation with the Czech based company DEKONTA we completed the risk assessment of a large former chemical plant of the company Istrochem Bratislava. The area is impacted by specific contamination with a wide range of pollutants originating from the former production of explosives and herbicides and rubber industry. There were two scenarios for the future area development comprising continual industrial use or revitalization of the area for residential development. Based on the completed risks assessment, soil and groundwater remediation was suggested for both scenarios.
Industrial Area in Kolín, Czech Republic
Under the management of the companies HECON and ERM we participated in the risk assessment study for the industrial complex in the eastern part of the town of Kolin, having more than 100 years long industrial history. The area is was specific in its geological and hydro-geological conditions due to location on the groundwater drainage divide, presence of Cretaceous sediments relics affecting the groundwater regime. In addition inflow of pollution from neighboring facilities had to be taken into account. Those factors made the risk assessment very complex.
Pharmaceutical Plant in Prague
ENACON has completed jointly with Ramboll Environ a focused risk assessment study for planned demolition of the former chemical production building within the pharmaceutical plant. The subject area was known to be contaminated namely with volatile organic compounds. The main purpose of the study was to evaluate risks for human health during and after completion of the demolition works as well as assessment of the potential for pollution leaching by infiltrated atmospheric precipitation and worsening the groundwater pollution. Based on the results of this focused risk assessment, further steps for risk reduction were recommended.
Risk Assessments under EU Co-Funded Operational Program in Slovakia
In Slovakia, realization of the EU co-funded operational program for investigation of selected locations with historical contamination was initiated in 2015 under supervision of the Slovak Ministry of Environment. For each of approximately 80 locations, subsurface investigation and risk assessment was completed. For the main field investigations suppliers, DEKONTA Slovensko and ENVIRONEDGE, ENACON prepared risk assessments. Locations covered by ENACON included the industrial and toxic waste dump in Vrakuňa, the pesticides storage in Nova Dedina, the train depot in Bánovce nad Bebravou, the ironworks in Kovohuty Krompachy, the fasteners production plant in Stara Lubovna and the former chemical warehouse in Strihovce.
Former metal processing plant KOVO in Březnice, Czech Republic
ENACON was commissioned by the municipality of Březnice to conduct a subsurface impact investigation and a risk assessment of the former KOVO plant involved in metal fittings manufacturing. The aim of the project was to assess a nature and extent of the groundwater contamination by chlorinated hydrocarbons and other pollutants originating from the plant and endangering groundwater sources for the local brewery. Based on the results of the risk assessment ENACON recommended to perform soil and groundwater remediation.
